Your Comments On The Subway Art Scheme

We asked “Would an arts project to paint the underpass / subway make you want to use it more? Example, if school pupils were encouraged to paint a mural along both sides”?

The general feeling for this project is very good, however there is also a strong and relevant point that whilst this area is still flooding and poorly lit there is little point in undertaking a project of this sort.

“Think out of the box… a montage of photos sent by whom ever wishes to submit them! Photos of old and new, happy memories, good times etc. A homage to the people of Horley” Bando Mc’ Tavish

“I definitely think you need the kids and ‘young persons’ on board, not just the nice ones but the not so nice ones too. If they were involved maybe they wouldn’t ruin it so much? Handing over the responsibility of maintaining it to the youth of today!”  Alice Blackhouse

“Fantastic idea, if you need any help then please let The Kings Head team know and we will be more than happy to volunteer some help”  Robin Mallia

“I use it every day, but it would definitely make it a more pleasant experience with a bit of a spruce up. Might deter the vandalism a bit as well.” Kate Cheema

“You never know, we might have a Banksy in our midst”  Eve Batchelor

“I think art project is a great idea”  Sophie Wynne

“Brilliant idea, Youth Support Service Redhill may be interested in supporting!”  Ali Smith

“Yes, for sure, its the pits!”  David Stride

“It’ll make it look nicer”  Karen Roberts

“What a brilliant idea, I use the subway everyday and to get local school pupils to give it a makeover would be great. It definitely needs something to brighten it up.”  Val Caffyn

“Graffiti ? No way.”  Darrel Gordon

“Or stop painting over the graffiti? So long as its not explicit it can be beautiful. Let the graffiti artists express themselves. Its free decoration for the subway too”  Natalie Holden

“Great idea”  Carol Ann Crispin-Chavez

“Great idea! Our niece’s school did that on the road crossing underpass and they had a great time doing it one weekend. Be good to have something bright and cheerful to walk through”  Patsy Mallinson

“Definitely. I never go under there, its so drab and dreary. Always choose to walk over the bridge. A bit of colour down there would be great”  Jayne Nagle

“Haven’t used it for sometime but colourful artwork would make it much more pleasant”   Theo Harris

“Great idea, lets stop the negative and try to build on the positive!”  Diane Chambers

“Seems like a nice idea but a bit of a quick fix, when it really needs proper attention to make it safe and not just ‘feel safe’ by making it colourful”  Megan Hunt

“It might lighten the mood on your daily commute to work / school”  Connor Jaramillo

“What about some kind of mosaic, they seem to last well. There could be a competition between local schools for the design – involve the whole community”  Natalie Hughes

“CCTV would be a great idea, especially once it has been cleaned up, flooding sorted and good lighting. I think the pictures from years gone by as well as present day, could be great, perhaps on one side with kids contribution on the other side. So a joint community effort to sort everyone”  Alison Dowrick

It’s been. done before..but why not. Previous occasion Horley Comprehensive ,as was, produced a series of paintings which were encapsulated in plastic sheeting and stuck to the walls. It works for a while but they suffered from the damp and eventually by vandalism.”  Doug Kilborn

The underpass at Oxted is a good example of how an arts project can work very well. It is a bright mosaic that has stayed clean and bright for years.”  Cindy Sharville
