Horley Town Blues U9’s Football Team Ecstatic over their fantastic cup win!

After only six months of playing together Horley Town Blues U9’s football team achieved an incredible end to a fantastic first season. 70% of the players in the team hHTFCU9ad never previously played for a football team before.

On Sunday 17th April 2016 at the Crawley 3G all weather pitch, they played in the League Cup Final of the Crawley League U9’s. Their opposition were the formidable Maidenbower Colts Black. Both teams have met previously in league games this season and were very evenly matched in terms of performance and ability. Maidenbower in their third season and Horley Town Blue in their first. The scales were not tipped in either teams favour.

Manager and coach Darren Holloway commented – “We never underestimated Maidenbower for one moment, we had it all to play for, we knew they would play their hearts out the same as us. Maidenbower have a great deal of experience and fantastic players. Myself and Mark Carter (HT Blues Coach) formed the team in September 2015 and have worked tirelessly with them since day one. After Christmas we introduced a fitness regime to build speed, alertness and overall strength. The players called the training torture but gave it their all every week.”

“Through sheer determination, effort and team play we took control of the match as best we could. The game was very exciting for both teams with play at both ends. George Holloway (captain of the the Horley Town Blues), played a fantastic defensive role along with team mate Jessica Hall and Shea Walder. The wall of defence George, Jessica and Shea made between them was outstanding and they did us proud, preventing the many attacks from Maidenbower. Ben Parsons & Spencer Carter took turns in goal for the Blues. Both keepers kept alert and made decisive saves to keep us in the game. Finley Dudley our striker in the first half of the game, did an amazing job to keep two Maidenbower defenders very busy. Working extremely hard on the right and left sides were Finley Tames, Ethan Hamzi, Noah Palmer and Oliver Strange. Between them they kept up a barrage of attacks in countless waves showing exceptional skill, control and teamwork between them. Our winning break came in the first half when Shea Walder rocketed the ball into the back of the net. Shea got a well deserved goal made from a combined team effort and he was extremely happy to say the least.”

“In the second half Spencer Carter (GK) was exceptional making quick saves and good connections with our striker Oliver Strange who came extremely close to scoring twice. Just slightly off target Oliver had the determination and right attitude to never give up. Another quick turn of play from Spencer Carter (GK) to centre midfielder Shea Walder, who then set up Oliver Strange for a goal. Oliver went off like a rocket and there was no doubt he was not going to score! Unfortunately the goal was disallowed due to Oliver not hearing the whistle as one of the Maidenbower players received an injury.”

“At the final whistle we could not believe it, hours of hard work and commitment came to fruition. Magic was created on the pitch that day as a fairytale dream came for the Horley Town Blues team! In true sportsmanship Maidenbower coaches congratulated us all. Coaches of both teams ended up hugging each other, it was an emotional end to a fantastic game. Horley Town parents were in tears of joy, you could see how much winning meant to them and the team. We salute Maidenbower for given us such a thrilling game and for making it to the final with us.”

The emails of congratulations have been flooding in from all managers and coaches of other teams at the Horley Town club. I have to say a HUGE “Thank You” to Dave Coogan, Nicky Maybury, Jim Donnelly, Steve Kilpin and all the other managers for their help and support in getting us started last autumn.
